Jude 1-25

1 Samuel 11:14-12:22

Numbers 16:1-4 Now Korah, son of Izhar son of Kohat….. rose up against Moses and took 250 men from Bnei-Yisrael, men of renown who had been appointed to the council.  They assembled against Moses and Aaron. They said to them, “You’ve gone too far! All the community is holy—all of them—and Adonai is with them! Then why do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of Adonai?” When Moses heard this, he fell on his face.

Some Hebrew Definitions

H7141-jrq-Korakh: ice, make oneself bald, shave, being cold

H4805-yrm-Mer-ee: rebellion

H4785-hrm-Mar-ah: bitter, weak

H4775-drm-Mar-ad: rebel, revolt

A Rebel is one with a bitter attitude

Rebellion can be either blatant or subtle.

In Korah’s case , it was definitely blatant.

A few characteristics are:

  • Fear - Numbers 13:33

  • Complaining - Numbers. 14:2; 16:3

  • Impatience - Numbers 16:14

  • Pride - Numbers 16:3, 12

  • Disobedience - Numbers 14:11, 16:12

Even in rebellion there is unity

250 men joined Korah, Datan, and Abiram

Moses, Aaron, and Korah are from all the clan of Kohath

Saul’s subtle rebellion

Saul exercised the same characteristics:

  • Fear - 1 Samuel 15:24

  • Complaining - 1 Samuel 13:11

  • Impatience - 1 Samuel 13:3-10

  • Pride - 1 Samuel 15:25; 30

  • Disobedience - 1 Samuel 15:9

1 Samuel 15:22-23  Samuel said: “Does Adonai delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of Adonai? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, to pay heed than the fat of rams. For rebellion is like the sin of divination and stubbornness is like iniquity and idolatry. Since you have rejected Adonai’s word, He has also rejected you as king.”

Mat 15:18-19)  But the things that proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart, and those things make the man unholy. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, and slander.

Overcoming Rebellion

Do the opposite of these characteristics

  • Faith (not Fear) - We walk by faith not sight - 2 Corinthians 5:7

  • Thanksgiving (not Complaining) - In all things give thanks - 1 Thessalonians 5:18

  • Patience (not Impatience) - Be still and know that I am God (all is under His control) - Psalms 46:10

  • Humility (not Pride) - Humble thyself - 1 Peter 5:5

  • Obedience (not Disobedience) - We cannot serve two masters - Matthew 6:24

Learn to recognize the characteristics.  It is then we can overcome rebellion.

Daniel 11:32 With smooth words he will seduce those who act wickedly against the covenant, but the people who know their God will stand strong and prevail.

Jonathan

Bold - 1 Samuel 13:13; 14:10

Courageous - 1 Samuel 13-14

Knew his God - 1 Samuel 14:10

Faith, Trust - 1 Samuel 13; 14:24-45

Matthew 11:12  From the days of John the Immerser until now, the kingdom of heaven is treated with violence, and the violent grasp hold of it.

“A child on a hill can see farther than a giant in the valley.”
